The Traditional Chinese herb, and star ingredient of Volufiline, Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Asphodeloides root), is apparently •only• ever extracted into this specific oil, (& sometimes alcohol).
My plan is to make a percolated fluid extract with the dried root, finely ground, and 190 proof ethanol (cheap everclear).
Then, after making this excessively potent extract, i'm going to put the beaker on a coffee-warmer (which can maintain temps of ~100°F) and evaporate the ethanol off as i slowly add the HPIB.
As i'm sure you're aware, ethanol's boiling point (or at least, it's steaming point) is around 72°F.
Anyway, the entire reason I am doing this is because Volufiline is one of the most expensive actives I've ever worked with. Amazon sells bottles for, basically, a dollar per milliter! Which is only around twenty drops or so.
Doing it this way will be a great learning experience and so far, the raw materials have not cost much.
The hydrogenated polyisobutene from TKB arrived super fast, was packaged securely. It's excellent quality and very reasonably priced.
TKB always has the ingredients that are difficult for a home formulator to source. And for that, i'm forever grateful.
