5/23/23 Update:  We have discontinued our original Carmine and are now selling our Bright Carmine instead.  This is because the original and Bright are very similar in shade and the prices for original went through the roof.

As such, we have also adjusted the prices for the product more than 100% less!

Carmine is a natural dye which is made from the dried bodies of a female insect called the Cochineal (Coccus Cacti).

Carmine (75470)

Our customers often ask for a "Natural Red Color" to use in cosmetics and toiletries. Carmine is by far the best option.

Carmine is expensive, there is no way around that. But, being a dye, it is also very intense and a little should go a long way.

Carmine has been an extremely popular color through the ages, for example, it was used by the Aztecs for dyeing and painting.

With the introduction of chemical dyes in the 1800's, Carmine lost favor simply because it is expensive, and not particularly light-fast.

In modern times, its main uses are to color food (such as juice, ice cream and yogurt) and to color cosmetics such as lipsticks and lip balms, rouges and eyeshadow.

Worked well for me

I had been wishing the traditional carmine was still available instead of only the bright carmine, but it turned out that the bright worked even better for me in my hand-made natural tinted lip balm. It blended well and looks lovely. I'm very pleased.

Pretty pigment

Just a little bit adds the tint I need for lip balm. Blends well w mica but overwhelms the shimmer a bit.
