Travel To Mars is a mica coated with titanium dioxide (a whitener), Silica, and Tin Oxide. Looking at it in the bag, it appears to be a white powder.

Titanium Dioxide (77891), Tin Oxide (77861), Silica

Particle size (10-60 microns).

Here are the guidelines for "best use":

  • Use the color alone or in with small amounts of dark colors such as blue, black or green
  • Use in transparent, translucent or semi-opaque formulas (for example: lip gloss, not lip stick)
  • Mix it gently (avoid grinding it in a mortar and pestle or blender)
  • Package in transparent packaging to show off the color shifting

When you rub the powder between your fingers, you will note that it is exceptionally soft and smooth (thanks to the silica). You will also see the whiteness disappear as it bursts into a bright, shiny fuchsia red/pink glow. If you rub the powder across a piece of white paper with black background and tilt the paper, you will see a subtle shift from red into coppers and golds. This is the color-shift in action.Mars is excellent in nail polishes and lip products, as well as any kind of translucent cosmetic such as clear soap, shampoo, or bath gel.

This is by far my most favorite pigment!!

I have always had a fondness to Travel to Mars but since I started a full collection of Travel to Mars as the base it's been monetarily rewarding to me too! This color will always be tops for me!

amazingly other-worldly!

the range of colour shift in Mars is a little narrow compared to the others in the collection. i still love it though! you have to have the right lighting condition to see the true effect of the Planetaries. bright fluorescent lights work well. the way i look for colour shifts is by having the colour down low, and then lifting it up in front of my eyes. so for example, if i've swatched a shifting shade on to the back of my hand, i'll hold my hand in front of myself about waist level, then slowly raise my hand to eye level. Mars does indeed start out at fuchsia-pink-red, and it ends at gold. to me there is a difference between the Planetary micas and the Hilites, one being the colour shifts. i think the hilites look like a pearly glow. the Planetary micas are a little more intense, and have a very subtle metallic-like finish. Mars and Hilite Red are similar, for example, but the red in Mars is stronger and changes colour. another person mentioned mixing Mars with black mica. it's definitely a gorgeous combination! :)

Wow

This transforms from copper to red to fuschia, as described. The pictures don't give you any sense of how amazing it really is! If you hold the Baggie under a light and tilt it, you can see the color shift. My only concern when I saw this was that, in an eyeshadow on the lid, you wouldn't really be able to see the color change. I thought maybe it would just look like Hilite Red, or it'd be too subtle to really notice at all. Not so! I ground up some brown oxide, yellow oxide, and red oxide red shade into my eyeshadow base to make a nice rich coppery brown color. Then I mixed it with equal parts Travel To Mars. The resulting shadow is a sort of reddish brown, that on the lid shifts from copper to fuschia/red. I'm sure that's really hard to picture, that's the best I can do to describe it, but trust me it's beautiful. And you can DEFINITELY see the color shift when it's on the eyelid. I'm so glad I got the planetary sampler, these micas are so worth it. I like to leave the baggies out on my counter with my lamp shining on them, so that every time I walk by I can see how beautiful they are :) Seriously, you NEED these micas.
